Meskel Hannesy ist eine heilige / kirchliche Zeremonie, in der jedes Jahr ursprünglich das Ende der Regenzeit und heute auch der Fund des wahren Kreuzes gefeiert wird. Das Meskel (das wahre Kreuz in Geez) wird nach dem Geez-Kalender am 17. September jeden Jahres in Eritrea und Äthiopien gefeiert, ca. 11 Tage nach dem Neujahr. Das Damera, aus Holz und Ästen zu einer Pyramide geformt, wird geschmückt und schließlich nach Gebeten angezündet. Und je nachdem, in welche Himmelsrichtung es fällt, wird ihm eine jeweilige Bedeutung zugesprochen. Dies wurde schon ca. 1000 v. Chr. so zelebriert. Es läutet das Ende der Regenzeit, den Anfang der Erntezeit und den Schulbeginn nach den langen Ferien für alle Schüler*innen ein.

Meskel Hannesy is a sacred / clerical ceremony celebrating each year originally the end of the rain season and today also the finding of the true cross. The Meskel (the true crucifix in Geez) is celebrated according to the Geez calendar on September 17 each year in Eritrea and Ethiopia, about 11 days after the New Year. The Damera, formed into a pyramid from wood and branches, is decorated and finally lit after prayers. And depending on the direction in which it falls, it is attributed a respective meaning. This was celebrated in such a way already approx. 1000 B.C.. It heralds the end of the rain season, the beginning of the harvest season and the start of school after the long vacations for all students.
